Discover the bold vision of R.M. Schindler and explore his legacy in Los Angeles on this special half-day bus tour that offers an insider’s look at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture’s three remarkable Schindler-designed sites: the Schindler House (1922) in West Hollywood, considered so radical at the time that the plans were at first denied by the local authorities; the Fitzpatrick-Leland House (1936), dramatically perched in the Hollywood Hills; and the Mackey Apartments (1939) in Mid-City Los Angeles, where you’ll have the opportunity to visit rarely-seen interior spaces.
Born in Vienna and trained under Adolf Loos before working alongside Frank Lloyd Wright, Schindler brought a new approach to Los Angeles—fusing European avant-garde ideas with the unique climate, light, and lifestyle of Southern California. His open plans, indoor-outdoor fluidity, and use of humble materials redefined how modern life could be lived.
The MAK Center is a contemporary, experimental, multi-disciplinary center for art and architecture that stewards these sites and carries forward Schindler’s spirit of experimentation.
